Q & A with Elicia, our Clubhouse VISTA.
Q: What’s happening this week at the Clubhouse?
EW: What an amazing afternoon last Friday! We invited Jennifer Stevens to come join in with the MAP team to discuss the subject of teamwork. The first thing we did was map out the word “Team”. The kid’s thought of ways the word “Team” comes into play here at the Clubhouse. Teamwork, friendship, patience, encouragement, and respect were some of the words listed that we focused on as a group and with that we were able to do some team building exercises to get started!
Q: What was the best part of the workshop?
EW: Let me ask you this: have you ever tried passing an object around in a circle with friends without using your hands or arms? It was one of the most difficult things to do, yet with a strong group of friends practicing teamwork, it was so exciting to accomplish together. As a team, we needed to get a tin can in one full rotation around the circle of 10-15 people without dropping it or it slightly touching the floor (granted we were sitting on the floor). Can you imagine that!? WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! The MAP kids and staff struggled to accomplish such a goal, but using the combination of brainpower in the room, we were able to figure out alternatives ways to complete the task successfully!
Q: What do you think the kids (and the MAP team) gained?
EW: The objective of this workshop was to learn how to strengthen as a team and develop clear communication with-in the group. I would say we accomplished that goal! The students learned the importance of how to communicate to each other in ways that would help the team successfully complete the task given at hand. As a staff member I am proud of the youth working hard and sticking together! I can’t wait to watch this team grow and flourish as the season continues!
