Sharing the same passion for youth and community outreach, I am excited to be a new member of the Manton Avenue Project Team! Hi, My name is Elicia. I am currently an Americorps VISTA member working closely with the Artistic Director Meg Sullivan at The Manton Avenue Project. With her help, I have started to gain a clear knowledge about the link between social change and strong Arts Programs/After School Programs. Communities all over the country and specifically in Providence, RI are trying to figure out how to bridge art programs to urban communities and encouraging youth to be excited about self-expression.
Last Friday I met some of the kids who participate in MAP’s programs. I was able to hear about their experiences and their individual goals/visions for the upcoming year! I was rewarded the opportunity to stand in a group circle as each child told me their names, number of plays written, favorite characters in their plays and what they would like to see happen in the Clubhouse this year. From puppet making to poetry readings, these kids are ready to take on new challenges that will not only change their lives but give them tremendous skills that will help them in school and beyond.
As the Clubhouse and Programming VISTA at MAP, my goal this year is to help continue the growth of MAP’s programming – improving what is already taking place and bringing something new to the table. One main project I will be working on is constructing a Teen Program for youth who have grown up doing MAP and still want to participate in their teen years. These teens will be mentored by local community artists and receive guidance on theatre/performance and creative projects. With this program in place, it will help keep the teens in the community engaged and active after school as well.
I am extremely excited about this year and I am looking forward to getting creative and making change happen!
